About This Work

Perfect Side View This pastel drawing ‘Model Session - 18-02-25 - 2’ is my second of this month’s session. During the first I had a front view with some interesting razor lighting coming from above. This time I had a perfect side view on model Galyna. The same lighting. Instantly I knew this was what I settled for. Even though we had 12 participants I still was able to take a position of my fancy. Isosceles Triangle The position she took basically consisted of an isosceles triangle. That makes it easy because it defines the angle of diagonally placed arms and legs automatically. Even though the result after one hour was quite alright I still wasn’t satisfied. But hey, what can you do within an hour? Back in my studio I saw I had the head wrong. Somehow I made it a bit too small. Live sessions can be a bit tricky because of the limited time to measure proportions the right way. You can take on head measurements with your stick for example. Then you can see how many heads fit into one vertical length. In this particular case that was about 3.8 heads. However, when you deviate with only a couple of mm this gives you a multiplyer effect. That can deliver some disproportions one initially doesn’t see right away but only secondarily. Some Post-Production Luckily that was the only mishap. Other proportions were dead-on. The only thing I did was some post-production, consisting of finetuning tones. In the end I wanted to create a smooth finish. The reason is I don’t like broken structures of white pastel strokes. The pastel felt a bit crumbly initially. Not everybody’s favorite - those smoothened out and blended pastels, certainly not mine. Good to try though and I like the slick result nevertheless.
