Artist Statement:
I’m an artist and graphic designer based in Toronto, Canada. I’ve been working in the field of graphic design for over ten years and have developed an affinity for the language of representation and visual communication. I became interested in painting as a means of thinking through design, to get off the computer and try speaking visually with a more visceral medium.
In my experience as a graphic designer, I've come to believe the deepest and most important form of storytelling is mythological in nature. I also feel that painting is the medium that is best suited to tell those stories. In terms of painting, I'm interested in what forms of communication and representation are exclusive to painting – what can be expressed through paint that couldn't otherwise be communicated? Furthermore, what opportunities are there in painting to tell stories couldn't other be told?
Every painting I've developed so far is in some way an exploration of those two questions.
