Artist Statement:
Originally from Milwaukee, I have since chosen to reside in Chicago. I earned a Bachelor of Science degree in 1989 from the School of Architecture and Urban Planning, and in 1992, I secured a Master of Architecture degree also at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Before attending the university, my art education included studying painting with the distinguished German-born artist, Guido Brink (1913-2002) at the Milwaukee Art Museum in 1977. Like Brink, I am a confirmed modernist, and consequently have always challenged the viewer to interpret my art and to personally engage with it. Art history courses figured prominently throughout college.
To a lesser degree my artistic influence rests with architecture, its forms and lines. Large color fields recall two- and three-dimensional features of architectural design and of the paintings of the mid-century Abstract Expressionists. Their non-representational images sparked my creative curiosity. Unlike the exactitudes of architectural drawing—which I certainly appreciate—I chose to pursue the freedoms and interpretations that Abstract Expressionism offers. Flat fields of color, serendipitous lines, and free-form brush strokes are primary elements of my compositions.
My work principally consists of acrylic paint on gesso-prepared canvas. When composing a collage, also on canvas, I consider almost any type of paper, cardboard, photograph, or fabric. With much of my work I employ a robust impasto.
The most influential individuals, those who truly speak to me, hail from the New York School. These include Robert Motherwell, Mark Rothko, Jackson Pollock, Franz Kline, Hans Hofmann, Willem De Kooning, Helen Frankenthaler, and Richard Diebenkorn.
Besides being a devoted artist, I am also the owner and president of Korom Creative LLC, a fine arts firm focusing on my painting, photography, and writing. Furthermore, I have photographed buildings in some fifty major cities in the United States and Europe for professional publication. I have recently completed my ninth full-length book about American art and architecture. Besides being an accomplished artist, I remain an architect.
I am a proud member of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Field Museum of Natural History, and the Society of Midland Authors.
I am willing to accept and create commisioned works, as I have in the past.
