Artist Statement:
These images are made by layering a relief printed mosaic over watercolor paintings. I am interested in the contrast between the paintings and the prints. In the watercolor layer I am exploring how the forces of gravity, fluid dynamics, chemistry and surface tension can be encouraged to produce atmospheric, spontaneous surfaces. The overlay of the mosaic is in direct contrast to the almost naturally occuring watercolor. It is made painstakingly by hand, every tessera an intentional decision. The placement and number of times it is printed requiring precision versus the almost wild nature of the watercolor.
The dual imagery in this work reflects how a deliberate, man made concept overlaying a turbulent environment is one way we try to make sense of the world. This attempt to see order or find and reinforce a pattern is much the same as a constellation is an understandable, human scale image translating a seemingly infinite, chaotic reality.
